Adopt an “executive 1st, functional leader 2nd” mentality

If you spend all your time with the engineering team, you are not doing your job. It's best if you're having regular 1:1's with your VP of Sales, the VP of Product, and anyone else who is a peer at your level. Your responsibility is now to understand how engineering can move the needle for everyone.
